SPOILERS AHEAD

Boom! Studios has never had a shortage of fantasy comics coming out of their line of books. This isn’t a bad thing, because they all have been home runs and they always find a way to give you something different and special with each different series. This is what we get from The Last Witch.

All credit goes to V.V. Glass and Natalia Nesterenko for the first page. For all respects to Conor McCreery’s writing, which is consistently good. The art is what pulls us in straight from the first panel. We are instantly introduced to our protagonist Saoirse, the level of expression that is presented to us on this first page, sets the stage for where most of our story will take place in this issue.

Conor McCreery presents us with some quality character development and sets the premise of the world our characters inhabit. This issue is very much a slow burn, but it’s a solid tempo that takes its time to present itself to us in delicate detail.

Overall, this issue was definitely working at its own pace, albeit a slow one. That being said, it’s done well, very well. Conor McCreery keeps the building of this world & moving his story forward continuously building up at a steady pace all the while managing to provide us with rich character development. He also makes great use of the collaborative efforts of the artists. When you have talents like V.V. Glass and Natalia Nesterenko in your corner, you can breathe easy taking your time telling a story and trusting that the readers will still have a hook to hang on to for the issue. The environment is a literal breath of fresh air and the characters are presented to us in a compelling and engrossing manner that left me flipping the pages excitedly. Although too soon to tell just how much this series has to offer. It provided us with enough originality in a genre that can easily fall into the norm and cliches, to evoke interest in the fate of these characters. I get the impression that this book was created with younger readers in mind and yet, a door is left open for more mature readers to interpret the darkness and severity of the situation that has befallen two children alone in the woods. We aren’t given much in the first issue but with the creative team and the premise of what’s to come, there’s tons of potential in this new series and I can’t wait to see what lies beyond the surface.
